Are pregnancy food cravings real? Get answers from our San Antonio OBGYNs
For decades, sitcoms and movies have made fun of women having pregnancy food cravings. Before you were pregnant, you may have thought these cravings were a myth. Now that you have a baby on board, you may realize these yearnings are all too real. At least 2 out of 3 pregnant women find themselves wanting to eat ice cream, curry, pickles or other foods they may not even ordinarily like. Some women develop pica, a condition that causes people to crave unusual nonfood substances, such as chalk or paper.
Our San Antonio OBGYNs can help you understand pregnancy cravings and nutrition. Here are a few of the most common questions patients ask us.
Why do I crave pickles, ice cream and fries?
We don’t know for certain. Pregnancy hormonal changes or nutritional deficiencies could cause pregnancy food cravings, while some food cravings may be driven by emotions or cultural expectations. You may even develop aversions to foods you loved before you were pregnant. It’s a very individual thing.
Is pica causing my strange pregnancy food cravings?
When pregnant women come to us saying they want to eat paper, chalk, sand or soap, we aren’t surprised. Most women don’t develop pica, the condition that makes women crave unusual nonfood items, but it does happen. You should always tell us if you crave these kind of substances because they may be dangerous for you or your baby.
How should I manage my cravings and stay healthy?
You can indulge your pregnancy food cravings without sacrificing good pregnancy nutrition. For example, if you crave chocolate, try eating a few bite-size candies, instead of the whole bag. Craving sweets? Have some fruit. Salt? Add herbs and spices to veggies.
You may crave foods that are not safe for pregnant women to eat, such as soft cheese, raw fish or runny eggs. It’s important to replace these unsafe foods with things that won’t harm you or your baby. For example, eat cooked fish or eggs cooked until the yolks are firm.
